Hi I'm Leilani

Award Winning Spoken Word Poet

Leilani is an award-winning spoken word poet and multi-hyphenate theater creative originally from Honolulu currently based in Brooklyn, New York. She is passionate about writing on the issues and injustices that she sees in the world around her and has a strong belief that spoken word is a powerful platform in amplifying unheard stories and marginalized voices. She often writes to uplift, educate and heal and does this through exploring her own identity as a mixed Japanese, Korean and Jewish American born and raised in Hawai’i. She has performed all around New York City (including off-Broadway), has featured at various venues and has won multiple awards in the slam circuit. Writing and performing is an honor and privilege for her, and she can’t wait to continue doing this for the rest of her life.

Leilani studied Theatre at Chapman University in Orange County, CA and has training in acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy and was recently a guest speaker for Chapman's "Theatre for Social Change" class. During her time there, she won the inaugural award in "Excellence in Scholarship and Research" for her original, devised theatre project "Standing Proud: a Collection of our Asian Voices" and garnered a "Henry's Outstanding Performer Award" nominee, was an "Asian Pacific American Friends of the Theatre" scholarship recipient for her playwriting and a "Outstanding Leadership in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" nominee. The intersection of spoken word, theatre and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) has always been important to her and she can't wait to continue to implement this passion in the future.

Christina is incredibly compassionate, clever, and one of the best directors I have worked with in my time as an actor. She cares a lot about her actors and provides a safe space to fail and have fun! I will never forget my time working with her on Standing Proud; it’s one of those experiences that  stay with you for the rest of your life.
